About Kandy

Nestled among misty hills, Kandy is Sri Lanka's cultural capital and home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic. Surrounded by lush tea plantations and the scenic Kandy Lake, this UNESCO World Heritage city is the heart of Sinhalese tradition and Buddhist devotion.

Set in a forested valley around 500 m above sea level, Kandy was the last royal capital of the Sinhalese kings and remains the spiritual heart of the island. Each evening, drummers and dancers perform near the lake, and every August the spectacular Esala Perahera procession fills the streets with elephants, fire-dancers and torchbearers. A cool climate, tea-clad hills and easy day trips make Kandy a favourite base in the cultural triangle.
